After we already discussed this year's trends for smartphones in the last blog post, we would now like to take a look at the current trends for new tablets in this article. While there are still some new innovative developments for smartphones, there is much less movement on the tablet market.
Mature technology
In contrast to smartphones, the sales figures for tablets are declining again, which can be attributed to various factors. On the one hand, smartphone displays are getting bigger and bigger, which makes the advantage of the previously much larger display of tablets less significant, and on the other hand, the trend is increasingly moving towards bezel-less display variants. In addition, tablets have faced stronger competition from convertible notebooks, which have become lighter and lighter, among other things.
With tablets mature and technologically no longer changing much, there are nevertheless always a few developments and trends - especially in the areas of display and memory.
Displays: Full HD usually sufficient
Full HD has become the established display resolution, which is sufficient in most cases. Even higher resolutions hardly bring any improvements for the typical tablet sizes, as they only really matter when the display is viewed very closely. On the other hand, the power consumption increases, which has a negative effect on the battery life, which is often already a weak point, despite the significantly larger capacity compared to smartphones.
Processor / RAM: It all depends on the memory
In terms of processor performance, there is currently no longer any need for significant leaps in performance. Modern processors are already fast enough to allow smooth operation even with simpler chipsets. Only for the use of complex graphics programs or 3D gaming, on the other hand, are high-end chipsets still interesting for new tablets.
The size of the RAM has a much greater influence on performance. To ensure that surfing on graphically complex websites and the parallel use of many open apps runs smoothly, it must be sufficiently large. A new tablet should have at least 4 GB, but preferably 6 GB or more, so that performance does not go downhill under heavy use.
Connectivity: 5G not yet a big issue for new tablets
While there are now many smartphone models equipped with the next mobile communications standard 5G, this development has not yet been a big issue for tablets. Of course, they are still equipped with an LTE module, but since tablets are increasingly used in WLAN networks and the LTE speed in mobile networks is currently still sufficient, the demand is not yet as great as for the current smartphone models.
Smart Home: Flexible control via tablet
One application that is becoming increasingly popular is the use of the tablet as a smart home control. Nowadays, in many cases a smart home system is directly installed and set up in new buildings or renovations. In addition to the option of control via a central terminal, some providers also allow a tablet to be connected to one's own smart home system via a corresponding app. This not only enables more flexible operation at home, but also, if set up, a connection while on the move. In contrast to a smartphone, a tablet also offers a much larger display, which makes it easier to operate and, for example, shows much more detail on surveillance cameras.
Such camera systems in particular can also be installed relatively easily in a flat / on a house at a later date and viewed on the move via an app on a tablet.
